If you're considering making a move in Dutchess County, Fishkill is a town well worth your attention. With its blend of history, natural beauty, and growing amenities, Fishkill offers a balanced lifestyle that appeals to families, commuters, and people looking for space without giving up convenience. Below, I’ll walk you through what it’s like to live here—things to do, where to eat and shop, and what the housing market looks like (with real numbers).
Fishkill may not be huge, but it offers plenty of variety when it comes to recreation, history, and nature. Some favorites:
Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center – Over 1,000 acres of farmland, gardens, and trails. It’s a great spot for hiking, birding, and seasonal events.
Van Wyck Homestead Museum / Fishkill Supply Depot Site – This historic house and grounds are reminders of Fishkill’s role in the Revolutionary War.
SplashDown Beach – A water park with a variety of slides, rides, and pools.
Dutchess County Renegades (Minor League Baseball) – Catch a summer game at Heritage Financial Park nearby.
Trail & Scenic Access – The town’s recreation department maintains local trails, and you’re close enough to Breakneck Ridge, Mt. Beacon, or trails along the Hudson for weekend hikes.
Downtown / Main Street Walks – Fishkill’s Main Street offers shops, cafes, and local businesses that make strolling and errands more enjoyable.
Fishkill has an eclectic dining scene—from casual diners to fine Italian. Some standouts:
I-84 Diner – Classic American comfort food
Dutchess Biercafe – Gastropub with local brews
Red Line Diner – Breakfast, burgers, local classics
Paesano’s Bakery – Great for breads, pastries, and light meals
Farm to Table Bistro – Seasonal, local ingredients
Hudson’s Ribs & Fish – Barbecue & seafood
Eleven 11 Grille & Spirits
Tomato Cafe – Local, cozy
Sotano Food & Wine, Trattoria Locanda, Antonella’s, Elisa’s Takeouts, Florina’s Brick Oven Pizza
Il Figlio Enoteca & La Sorella – Two newer, well-reviewed Italian spots (one for dinner, one as a café / lunch spot)
These give you a nice range of choices without having to drive far. There are many other great eateries throughout both the village and town.
Fishkill has plenty of shopping from cozy boutiques to national chains:
Big-box and home-improvement stores, including a Home Depot
Local grocery options and specialty food shops
Main Street boutiques, gift shops, cafés and specialty retailers
Nearby shopping centers in neighboring towns if you’re willing to drive a few minutes

Dutchess County (proxy for Fishkill region): In July 2025, the median sold price was about $460,323, up 7 % year over year. Roughly 52–53 % of homes sold above asking price, indicating strong buyer competition. Average days on market dropped to ~47 days, a faster pace compared to prior periods.
Inventory & market pressure: Active inventory in Dutchess County has contracted substantially. In late 2024, only ~431 single-family homes were on the market—down nearly 29 % year over year.
Interpretation / KCM lens: Observations consistent with what KCM often emphasizes—when inventory remains constrained in desirable areas, home prices tend to stay buoyant even if rates or macro conditions try to cool demand.
In Fishkill you'll find several housing styles:
Single-family homes on varying lot sizes
Townhomes / condos (some newer construction)
Historic homes (colonial, Dutch colonial, farmhouses)
Newer subdivisions or planned communities
Mixed zones and in-town neighborhoods near Main Street
The diversity of housing types gives options for different budgets and tastes.
Fishkill offers a comfortable, community-oriented feel without being too remote. Residents often praise its balance of accessibility and privacy. Hudson Valley Magazine The town is also commuter-friendly, given its proximity to I-84, Route 9, and reasonable access to Metro-North via nearby stations.
On the flip side, traffic along Route 9 and the main connectors can get busy. Some parts of Fishkill require a car for errands or commuting, especially as public transit options are limited.
