LaGrange's holiday parade dates only to 2018, and it still runs on borrowed light. The town supplies the route, the detours and a mailbox at Town Hall. The rest comes from residents and local businesses: a green bulb on a porch this week, then a lighted pickup or a homemade float on Route 55 the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
That makes November in LaGrange one month-long build. It starts at your front door and ends with Route 55 closed to traffic between two roundabouts.
This is Operation Green Light for Veterans week. From November 4 through November 11, the Town of LaGrange is asking residents and businesses to show a green light, either by swapping an outdoor bulb or by lighting a window. The town points to Town Hall as its example.
The town's own description of the idea is simple: "One light might seem like a small gesture. But imagine what an entire community glowing green could mean." The request takes one bulb, and it runs through Veterans Day. It's also the town's first ask of the season for residents to light up their own property. The second ask is much bigger.
In November 2018, Destination Dutchess billed the November 24 event as the "very FIRST Town of LaGrange, Holiday Parade of Lights." It was set for 6:30 p.m. and ran west from Arlington High School on Route 55 to Freedom Road, the same route the town uses today. Spectators were asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.
Three years later the lights left Route 55. The Poughkeepsie Journal listed a LaGrange Festival of Lights Drive-thru at Stringham Park, 78 Stringham Road, from 5 to 8 p.m. on December 11, 2021.
An undated town notice for the Drive Thru Edition shows how much residents took on for that format. Everyone stayed in their cars and tuned to 87.9 FM for holiday music. Each car picked up a Holiday Hunt card at a welcome tent and dropped letters in a North Pole Mail box. At the end of the loop, Santa and Mrs. Claus posed for car photos from a sleigh provided by Bit of Heaven Farm LLC.
The light partners list read like a town directory:
The parade returned to Route 55 after that. The town's parade page carries a highlight video of the 2023 Festival of Lights Parade. Dutchess Magazine listed the 2024 edition for November 30 at 6:30 p.m. Destination Dutchess listed the 2025 edition for Saturday, November 29, on Route 55, and its listing promised floats plus lighted firetrucks and highway trucks.
The 2026 parade is Saturday, November 28, at 6:30 p.m. It leaves the Arlington High School roundabout, heads west on Route 55 and ends at the Freedom Road roundabout.
| Time | What happens on Route 55 |
|---|---|
| About 6:10 p.m. | Detours begin and the route closes to through traffic |
| 6:30 p.m. | Parade steps off in front of Arlington High School |
| During the parade | The procession heads west toward the Freedom Road roundabout |
| After the parade | Police reopen the road, and security releases parked cars from lots |
The detour starts only 20 minutes before step-off, and that sets the timing for everything else. If you arrive at 6:15, the road is already closed.
The town's parking rules are short and strict, and the last one changes how you plan the evening:
Once you pull into a lot on Route 55 that night, you're staying until the end. That's why dinner plans and parking plans belong together. Athena Gyro at 1167 Route 55 says on its website that it reopened in 2026 after a full renovation and added a full bar. Daily Planet Diner is at 1202 Route 55 and is one of this year's parade sponsors. Playa Bowls LaGrangeville at 1133 Route 55 lists weekend hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. All three are on Route 55 near the parade stretch. Check where your table is against the detour map on the town's page before you count on driving out at 7.
The procession you'll watch on November 28 hasn't been finished yet. In October, LaGrange Parks and Recreation asked for floats from "local business, community organization, neighborhood group, sports teams, or a family with a big imagination." For anyone not ready to build a float, the town added, "Decorated and lighted vehicles are welcome, too!"
It's the same model the drive-thru used, back on the road, with the town closing Route 55 and residents supplying the lights.
The 2026 Community Day Plus sponsors on the town's parade page are:
Signing up a float, a lighted truck or a family car is done through the Town of LaGrange parade page.
The town calendar and the LaGrange Association Library at 1110 Route 55 fill the weeks before the parade and the ones after it. Here they are in order:
Throughout December, Parks and Recreation will also run its "Sprinkles' Bucket List" campaign. It's a set of social media challenges with chances to win local and Hudson Valley family experiences.
Mail and lights have gone together here before. The town's drive-thru notice called that event the last chance to have an elf drop a letter in the big red North Pole Mail box.
I've been helping LaGrange neighbors since 1994, and nights like November 28 are a good reminder of how much of this town residents build themselves.
